Description

Kebili, South of Tunisia

Located 500km to the southwest of Tunis, Kebili is the main city of the governorate of the same name. Known for its oases and its important production of dates, the governorate of Kebeli has become world famous for its International Festival of the Sahara. Held in Douz every year (municipality since 2004), this festival welcomes an important number of tourists. The festival, which started back in 1910, gathers tribes of Tunisia, North Africa and the Arab World. They engage in camel races and present Arab horsemen shows. The event also allows the discovery of the nomadic way of life, the nomadic poetry and culinary traditions. Kebili is close to the Tunisian part of the Oriental Great Erg, which make it an important stopover in the visit of the Tunisian South. Indeed, the width of the Oriental Great Erg exceeds 140km and its dunes reach 300m in height: a breath-taking landscape. A nomadic population, the Rebaiya, still live in the Great Erg. Goat, camel and sheep raisers, they live as nomads on each side of the Algerian border.
